Kakao Small Sans

Preview of Kakao Small Sans

Kakao Small Sans (카카오 작은글씨) is one of the two newly released free Korean font by the tech giant Kakao Corp. As the “smaller” sibling to the Kakao Big Sans, Kakao Small Sans is designed for smaller font size display. Kakao Small Sans’ letters are designed with generous letter spacing and expanded counters, ensuring excellent readability even on small displays. For the latin characters, the joints are made slimmer for unique look especially on characters like “a”, “b” and “d”. It somewhat reminds me of Clash Display font.

Kakao Small Sans comes with three weights: Light, Regular and Bold. It’s suitable to be use as body text, but I would argue it will still look good for larger font size display. Similar to Kakao Big Sans, Kakao Small Sans also supports Korean, Latin, Cyrillic, Japanese Kana and symbols. It’s also being released under SIL Open Font License v1.1 therefore you can download this font for free for your personal and commercial projects.

Font Homepage and Download

To download, visit the page and look for the green “Code” button. Once clicking it, a popover should appear with the option to “Download ZIP”. Clicking it will download the entire repository. You should be able to find the font family under the “fonts” folder inside “Kakao Small Sans” folder. In Photoshop, I was able to select this font under the name “Kakao Small Sans”. However for some reason the Light weight was registered as a different font family with the Korean name (however it appears gibberish with my computer).
