HS Jandari

Preview of HS Jandari, a beautifully designed display style free Korean font

HS Jandari (HS잔다리체) is a display style Korean typeface developed and published by Tohwalgong (토활공). The typeface takes its name from “Jandari-ro,” a road in Seoul. “Jandari” is a pure Korean word meaning “small bridges,” referring to the many modest bridges that once crossed streams in that part of the city during the Joseon era. The font is deeply personal in origin.

The designer describes Jandari-ro as a place that bridges his past and present, having lived and worked in the Hapjeong, Seogyo, and Donggyo area across different chapters of his life, from struggling years at a prep school near Hongdae, to a commission collaboration with Adobe Korea, to settling in his current neighbourhood of Yeongdeungpo, just one big bridge away. The typeface is the first entry in a new autobiographical series from Tohwalgong called the “Seoul Series,” each installment exploring the designer’s inner experiences through the lens of places in the city.

Visually, the letterforms carry that same layered tension: the designer describes the typeface’s character as flexible yet firm, cute yet sharp, lively yet quietly serene, and ordered yet slightly chaotic. These contradictions reflect what he felt walking those streets.

Besides that, HS Jandari is notable for being a typeface developed with over 90% AI-assisted automation, a Tohwalgong’s first. Using Python, each consonant and vowel was designed as a modular unit, with the automated system handling assembly and sizing across the full character set, much like casting metal type from a single mould. The designer notes that this workflow allows human effort to focus solely on the design of the base jamo set, with the automation handling the rest with near-complete accuracy. The combination of the technical accuracies and the elegance of the curvature of the strokes makes this an elegant yet sharp font, a perfect marriage of modern precision with the nostalgic aesthetic.
